PETONE AGAIN BEATEN.

Petone were distinctly unlucky in being defeated by W.Y.M.I. on the Petone' Recreation Ground on' Saturday, losing by two goals to one. An unfortunate spirit was engendered during the game, largely owing to the lax refereeing. The same cause marred what might have been a very good game under other circumstances. The teams were:— Petone:'. . M'Vean; Steele, Haines; Laraey, Campbell, Hanlon;' Baistow, Dunlop. Leslie, M'Causlan, Craig. . W.Y.M.1.: Hoyte; Martin, M'Girr; Boe, Balland, Price; Worth, Rigby, M'Leod, Gone, Bridge. • .During the first spell W.Y.M.I. had the ■wind''in their'-favour, and it was very soon obvious that the cold southerly would be a considerable factor in the game. W.Y.M.I. quickly made use o£ the advantage of'the wind and scored twice, first through Rigby and. then through Bridge. More or less even play resulted for a while after that, arid each end had to defend in turn. Petone then pressed, and the ball was put well under the crossbar, but the referee disallowed the score. This was a disappointment to Petone, for there was no doubt about it being a legitimate goal. They continued to press, however, and Leslie scored after a good solo effort. Just before half time Craig •was unlucky :in not' making' the . scores 1 even.

When endswere changed it. was generally thought that Petone, with the wind in their favour, would at any rate make a draw of it. They "kept up continual pressure, but the forwards were somewhat demoralised and bustled, and, in spite of frequent shots, no score eventuated; A measure of praise would be due to the W.Y.M.I. defence for keeping their opponents at bay had their 'tactics been more in accordance with the proper spirit of the fame. Throughout the second spell the 'etone custodian was allowed to freeze, being called upon to handle the ball about once only. Towards the cud of the game the W.Y.M.I. goalkeeper, Hoyte, had'=to be carried off the field. Mr. M. Brian was referee.
