NEGLIGENT BUS DRIVER

FINE AND SUSPENSION

CHiUSTCHURCH, This Day

George M'Millan, of Timaru, driver of a motor-bus which was struck by a train at Hornby, pleaded guilty this morning to charges of negligent driving and attempting to pass over the crossing when the line was not clear. The police said that tho defendant did not sec the train coming, nor did he hear the whistle, n-hich was soundo 1. The bus was struck by the engine and knocked .sideways. The train was not travelling fast, otherwise 'there would havt been a .serious accident. There were six passengers in the bus, but only two were seriously hurt.

The defendant "was convicted and fined £5. His present licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited, from obtaining another till 31st August. Tho Magistrate said that tho driver of a public conveyance had to have the safety of tho public always in mind.
