FRANCE. AND. BRITAIN

UNUSUAL BOAT RACE

An unusual sequel to tho University boat race was to. take place this year, says tho "Manchester Guardian." Cambridge, the winning- crew, was to v-a ■. on the Seine in Paris against the best French crew, and Oxford, the beaten university, was to compete with the second best French crew. The presidents of both Oxford and Cambridge Boat Clubs accepted tlie invitation to go to Paris to take part in what is called the. "grand match of the universities." This was a sporting regatta which would be attended by tho President of the French Republic, and by Lord Tyrrell, the.'British Ambassador in France. Arrangements were made to sell seats on both banks of the jSeinc, so that the profits may be devoted to the General federation of. Intellectual Workers.

In rowing quarters in England the event - was regarded with some doubt, for unless tlie two crews could keep in training ..-after tlu race on tho Thames, tliey would have some difficulty in not being beaten badly, by the French crews, ' who.-intended to show that French oarsmanship was equal, to that of tlie two English Universities.
