BUSES AND EXHAUSTS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—"Daimler's" statement in last night's "Post" that the "blurting" of the exhausts on the council buses is not due to indifference or inability on the part of the drivers raises a controversial point. I can assure "Daimler" that the motor expert who advised me in the matter ia" an expert,- and a highly competent one, too* He reiterates that the loud exhaust noises are duesolely to lack of proper attention to the ignition arid carburetter when on', the down grades or when _ pulling up at stops. It is" certainly significant that sometimes tho buses ''blurt", and sometimes -they do not, and that since the correspondence appeared the noises have, in some cases, ceased and in othei's have been muffled considerably. I would ask "Daimler," however, in the face of his letter, whether he would state the cause of the explosive noises as he understands it. -lam>t?tc- .->:.' crocus. 21st'May. .-,■■■ (To the1 Editor-.) Sir,—ln reply to the letter signed '\Daim-' ler," which appeared in last night's "Evening Post," I would like to state a fewfacts. This explosion which goes on from these buses can easily.be stopped at a. small-cost, and easily operated. The bus. driver says he would like to enlighten "Civicus" regarding tljia noise. I would like to enlighten 'Daimler" also to demonstrate to him how it can be done; I would also like-to state that the.vehicles of a certain'privately owned bus_company which runs in the suburbs of the city do not make-this hideous noise, and the grades are just as steep as the city hills.-! am, etc., : MECHA NIC: ■ 21st May.' . .. .
