SUNDAY SALE OF SWEETS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Through your columns I -wish to inquire why the authorities controlling Sunday trading seem to be taking little action to prevent the sale of-sweets' on Sunday. For some months I have been of the opinion that certain children on their way to Sunday school have spent the pennies which should have gone into the collection plate. On inquiry from the children 1 was told that certain confectioners would sell to children provided the purchases were kept in their pockets until they were away from the shop. Last Sunday, however, I saw three children betweeii the ages of 4 and 10 years come out of one of these shops with sweets in their, hands. It is a pity that children who are being educated in the higher things of life should be tempted to disregard the good they have been taught by such shopkeepers, who seem to have no sense of duty towards the children. But the shopkeeper should not take all the blame, for those who raise no voice of protest when: they are aware of such happenings would appear to sanction them. I wish to express my disapproval of allowing shops >O'':qpeu on Sunday, and would suggest that;" if it is necessary for them to be open, children should not be served. 1' hope th&'t some action will be taken and thus save our children from being taught to become a nation with, no regard for the Sabbath.—* I am, etc., ' PKESBYTERIAN.
