HUTT RIVER BOARD
Tho Hutt River Board met last night. Mr. F. S. Hewer presided,, and there were also present: Messrs. G. A. Chapman, C. Gostelow, J. Mitchell, the clerk (Mr. A. J. Gearing), and the engineer (Mr. H. Sladden). , The board voted £3 3s as its annual contribution to the Wellington Free Ambulance. A letter from tho Lowa- Hutt borough engineer (Mr. A. G. Bush) stated that at the request of the board he had investigated tho obstruction beneath the Awamutu street culvert, and found that it was a buried tree of considerable size. „ It must have been in its present position for many years, and should have been cut out when the culvert was constructed. He made every effort to remove it, even trying to pull it clear with a steam roller, but was not successful. Finally he had the wood cut away to the level of the stream. The board expressed its thanks for what had been done.
The owners of the shingle plant which had annoyed residents of Alicetown by working at night wrote confirming the arrangements made with the chairman of the' board *that the working hours o£ the plant should be from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Complaint that the Awamutu stream had not been clear and, becoming blocked with weeds, was backing up on to properties, was made by the Waiwetu Progressive Association. A reply is to be sent that the work o£' clearing the stream is now in hand. ~
