TIRED OF NAME

INVERCARGIbL A JOKE

PROPOSAL TO CHANGE

(By Telegraph.—Pre^s Association.) INVEEOAECJILL, 20th. May. . The following recommendation from

the Finance Committee came before the luvereargill City Council this evening: "That the council take into consideratipn the suggestion that the name of tlio city be changed from Invercargill t» Cargill.''

Councillor H. J. Macalister, chairman of the committee, said lie knew many would oppose the change purely from' conservatism. There was precedent for the. change, both, near at hand and far distant, the speaker mentioning the. change of Christiania to Oslo. He said that InvorcargiU was not a euphonious name, and understood the name was bestowed in Dunedin as a joke during a banquet at which the superintendent, Captain Cargill, was present. The name had been put up with by Southlanders long enough.

Councillor C. J. Brodrick considered it the most absurd suggestion he had ever heard.

"Invercargill is a, beautiful name," said Councillor T. o'Byrne, "and I should bo sorry to see- it changed to Cargill."

The council finally decided to delete

the words."from Invercargill to Cargill" from the clause, and in this amended form it was adopted.
