OIL FROM COAL
SCHEME, POR AUSTRALIA
LONDON, 2nd May. Extraction of oil from Australian coal by Imperial CJiemical Industries, Ltd., is : foreshadowed by Lord Melchett, chairman of tho company. Lord Melchett told the "Sun" that negotiations were in progress with the Standard I.G-. Company of America, with a view to arranging for mutual cooperation in the solution of the problems associated with the extraction 'of oil from brown and black coal. Agreement had practically bepn reached, facilitating early practical progress in Britain and Australia, ho added. Sir Lemon Raws, managing director of Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand, Ltd., says that tho project is a highly important development "I think that it will mean a lot to Australia. The Standard I.G. Company is really a branch of very powerful German dye trusts. The de-. velopment of the Australian business is in the hands of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd,, Melbourne."
