LONDON, 19th May.

lii the House of Commons, Mr. Neville Chamberlain (C.) initiated a debate on unemployment. Ho emphasised the seriousness of the situation. He did not ask the Government to adopt safeguardiitg, but he asked for a declaration that there would bo no fiirther interference with existing duties for a term of- years.

Mr. J. H. Thomas, Lord Privy Seal, said that the problem'of unemployment could never be solved by any Government unless that Government could carry with it the hearty co-operation of the workers. He admitted that unemployment was getting worse, and would increase by 2700' by to-morrow.
