TRANSPORT PROBLEM

LESSONS FROM ABROAD

BUSES AND TRAMS

• <By Telegraph.) . ••;' (Special to "The Evenlno Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day,

'' Co-ordination between trams and buses is'the latest development in the transport situation in the .cities of England, and' America," states Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, who has returned from a four months' trip. ' • ~. "I have come back convinced that wo are doing the rjght. thing here in. our efforts to solvo transport problems," Mr. Allum said. "The controversy about trains and'buses has ceased, and buses are being run in conjunction with Irams, sometimes as feeder ■ services, and sometimes on alternative routes." No ono city provided Mr. Allum with, -a.solution of transport problems that he could confidently recommend for trial in Auckland, which city was a big .area with a small population. Most other cities have four -or live times tho population on the same area. .That, Mr. Allum considers, is the crux of the matter. '=• Faros to be remunerative in Auckland inevitably bear, somewhat heavily on those living a considerable distance out. , - "■ ' ■

"For some years to come euburban Auckland will be essentially served by trams and buses," continued Mr.F Allum. "If only people here could see the trains and buses in use abroad I am sure they would-have few complaints against either ■ the policy or. ta& work of the Transport Board." ~.
