A READING CIRCLE
Members of the Dickens-Shakespeare Society met in St. Andrew's Hall last ni"ht. Mr. E. S. Mirams presided and announced that the policy of the society for the year would be to hold, interspersed, four evenings of Dickens readings; four readings of Shapespeare s plays, and four "variety" evenings. Messrs. W. J. Mountjoy and Salt and Misses Gostlmg and Vare were elected as a Syllabus Oommittee, with power to add to their nuinMrs. Violet Wakelin (secretary) gave a very interesting reading of "Reminiscences of Dickens," by James T. Fields, Extracts from "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Macbeth" were recited and read respectively by Miss Maude Farrant and Mrs. Cruttenden, and Othello s defence against charges of'magic in the winning of Desdemona was ably interpreted by Mr W. J. Mountjoy. Songs were given by Mrs. Oddy (contralto) and Miss Tui Hall (soprano), both ladies joining in singing the ."Barcarolle" duet. Mrs. Ross acted an ainusing domestic^ sketch, and Kipling recitations were given by Miss Vare. Encores were freely responded to Mrs. Wakelin played for the singers.
