The Northern Meeting,
F Foster, who won the Great Northern Steeplechase on Uralla last year, has been engaged to ride Aurora Boreahs in both the Great Northerns. Foster was associated with the Century Hurdles Winner when she won over country, at Hawera. ' . : Riding engagements announced ior tne Great Northerns include:—H. Dulieu, Elymanor; R. Syme, Prince Lv; W. B.owden, Mister Gamp; A. Tricklcbank, Ponjola. H. Gray has been engaged to ride Standfast in the Cornwall Handicap, and R. Reed probably will be on Pompeius. Southern trainers are , making arrangements to travel to Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, and two prominent Great Northern candidates., Ponjola and Aurora Borealis,,are expected to undertake the northern trip early this week. Fryer is undecided yet as to whether he will patronise Ellerslie or Otaki, but the chances are that he will be at Ellerslie with Mendip, Copey, and Airtight. Mendip is improving with every gallop, and has only to train on well in the next fortnight to be a distinct possibility wherever he races next month. B. Burgess.is "another wßtt has not yet made definite arrangements, but he also may be at Ellerslie with Atholspear and Austerity. , . . R. Reed on Phar Lap. R. Reed returned to. Auckland by last, 'week's "Sydney steamer, and was at Wanganui/on Saturday. Referring to Phar Lap, he said he could pot.but be otherwise than impressed with the freak galloper, and was enamoured of his action; that was before the three-year-old got so far in front of Nightmarch in' the A.J.C. Plate as to be almost invisible to the naked eye.
Riccarton Notes,
Amorist is reported to look. in capital order for engagements near at hand. He showed to some1 advantage in some of the hurdle races at the Dunedin Meeting.
Mr; J. R. M'Kenzie's imported colt by Ellangowan is striding along freely in useful task's on the Riccarton tracks. He should be a decent performer next season, when he will commence his racing career. '
Red Heckle is enjoying a spell at present, but now the weather has broken F. Christmas may bring him in again. "There is no intention o£ working him at present, and while the weather was mild.he was allowed to. run out, but his trainer contemplates stabling him and keeping him in light exercise during the winter. Reports from Greymouth state that the Riccarton jockey R. Coveny is making a good recovery from the accident that has laid him aside during the last few weeks.
A. M'Aulay has resumed work with. Mr. A. Louisaon's three yearlings which were purchased at the Trehthain sales in January. The brother of Phar Lap may be most frequently discussed because of his relationship to the present-day champion, but the Hunting Song—Erie qolt and the Pombal —Waterwings colt arc both attrac-tive-looking youngsters. . ,
There is a possibility that 11. Nurse will, take Lancer and After Ten north for the Hawkes Bay and Napier Meetings, after which the pair may be raced at Trentham next month. '- .
Straightcourse has done well since his success at Amberley. He is booked to race at Ashburton and later at tile Dunedin Meeting, and he may show further improvement before the end of the, season. An Undesirable Clash. ' It' is understood that the Oamaru Jockey Club will not hold a meeting next month, but 12th July is 'under consideration for a day's racing. The winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be concluded on that date, so there are many people whom it will not suit. Old Identity Passes.
