AVIATION ART UNION
INVBItCARGJLL'B LUCK
In an atmosphere of hopeful expectancy on the part of sonic two ■hundred spectator*, the aviation art union was drawn in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday night. The work o£ drawing the prizes commenced at 0 p.m., and it was over three hours afterwards that the last prize was allotted. Six bags, the first containing marbles each bearing a letter, from A to E inclusive, and the remainder with marbles numbered from 0 to 9, were used in the draw. Members-of the committee oE the Wellington Aero Club held these bags, and the marbles were drawn by members of the audience. The first marble drawn from those with letters on' them denoted the scries of the ticket to be drawn. The number was then made up by taking a marble from each of the other live bags. It that ticket had been sold, reference to ledgers giving 'this information, a barrel containing 105 marbles (the total number of prizes) numbered serially, came into operation. The marbles were well shaken up, and a sergeant of polieq drew one, which gave the number of the'prize to which the ticket was entitled. The butts of all the tickets issued were arranged on shelves properly indexed, so that it was the work of a moment to produce the butt corresponding to the number of the ticket, and the lucky prize-winner's address was announced. It was all very simple really—all, that is, except having one's own ticket, number made up by the gentlemen responsible for ' taking the marbles from the bag. Every ticket issued was drawn for, but ill case a ticket had not been sold, the whole of the draw took place over again. Strangely enough the first number drawn was that of a ticket which had not been sold.
Probably more out of curiosity than in any great expectation of being able to walk up and claim the first prize there and then, about two hundred people attended to witness the proceedings. There have been livelier affairs in the same hall. However, there was plenty to keep the interest aroused, for within the first hour and a half the first seven prizes had not been drawn. The first prize drawn was a £10 one, and it was some time before a Wellington resident drew a .prize. When, this'did happen the audience applauded mildly, and continued to do so every time a prize went locally. The big money, however, did not seem to be in any hurry to be handed over, and it was not until five minutes, to eight, that the long-awaited number one came out of the barrel. A few of the audience sighed disappointedly when it was announced that the all-important ticket was held by Mr. D. Scandrett. of Invercargill. The second prize of £500 was drawn shortly afterwards by another Invercargill resident, Mrs. W. J. Braien, so Invcrcargill was well in the limelight. Interest then centred on the third prize of £250, and this was one of the last to come out of the barrel.' The holder of the ticket is Mr. H. Sevenson, of Dannevirke. Wellington, however, annexed the fourth • and seventh prizes, each.worth £100, Mr. Ales Scott, care of the Railway Advertising Department, and Mr. F. J. Richardson, of Lower Hutt, being the buyers of the .tickets. The great majority of the prizes went away from Wellington. It is understood that the Wellington and Wairarapa Aero Clubs will benefit substantially from the effort.
