EPIC OF AIR AND SEA

AMERICAN MANOEUVRES

ACCIDENT IN PACIFIC

HONOLULU, 16th May.

A dramatic epic of the air and sea was recounted to-day when an interisland steamer arrived with the survivors of a sensational aerial accident, during military and naval air manouvres that resulted in the drowning of a non-commissioned officer and tho loss, of four aeroplanes. Forty-six machines participated in. the exercises. While flying between Oahuamaui and Hawaii, an Air Corps sergeant and three other members of the crew attempted to leave a disabled bomber when 4000 feet in the air, but the shrouds of the former's parachute became entangled in the 'plane's rigging, taking him with it to the bottom of the sea. A convoy of aeroplanes settled on the huge seas that were running in efforts to save the survivors. Rescue vessels picked up the occupants of the convoy machines, which, after rescuing the bomber's crew, drifted helplessly for many hours.
