FLOODS IN GERMANY
RAINS IN UPPER RHINE
OBER-AMMERGAU AFFECTED
BERLIN, 15th May.
The Upper Rhine has risen seven feet in twelve hours as a result of- a hundred hours' torrential rains. Rivers and lakes in Southern Germany are flooded. Thousands of acres of land are under water. The inhabitants fear they will be compelled to leave their villages, especially in the Black Forest, where the streams are higher than during the- great floods of 1882 and 1896. The Baden Government is already organising relief for the homeless. Ober-Ammergau, where the Passion Play was attracting tens of thousands of people, is threatened with isolation. Several local lines already are under, water, while the incessant rain is spoiling the performances. The River Isar has reached the level of the 1924 disaster.
