IMPORTANT AMENDMENTS

LONDON, 14th May. The House of Lords, by 134 votes to 48, carried an amendment to a clause in the Coal Mines Bill limiting district outputs. It rejected by .82" votes to 35 an amendment moved by Lord Gainford and accepted by Lord Thomson to reinstate the provision deleted by the House of Commons for,raising a central levy in order' to facilitate the sale of any class of coal. .. . .' Lord Melcliett's amendment, providing that in eases where a colliery is in the hands of some manufacturing undertaking .using 'the output of coal in its own works such coal should not be included in the quota, was carried by 105 votes to 13. ,

The clause giving power to raise district levies was omitted without divis^ ion.'
