Considerable damage was caused throughout 'the southern part of tlio State by a fierce .storm which raged all ni-ght long/ xhe wintf. reaching a velocity of 80 'miles an hour. Hoavy rain fell, and widespread damage was done. Fishing craft in : bays along the coast were blown ashore and damaged; trees were uprooted, and buildings unroofed in St. Kilda and Melbourne.
Shipping was disorganised by the gale and the departure of both oversea, and inter-State vessels delayed. For the first time in the history of the Port Philip Pilot Station it was not, able to supply pilots, as the weather was too bad and prevented pilots going aboard or disembarking. The steamer Mooltan, tossed by the swell in the bay, eventually berthed at Prince's Pier after considerable damage had. been ' done both to the ship and the wharf. ; The residents of Inglcwood experienced' an anxious night. The town reservoir was notable to stand the strain and the top of the bank gave way, but it settled down on firm foundation. " There was a pre-arranged signal for immediate ,danger.. The local firebell sounded and residents rushed from their homes." The surrounding par,ts were flooded to a depth of inches, but actually little damage was done.
Telegraphic work , has. been • greatly hampered, and then for a while was interrupted; resulting in tho delay of transmissions of English and . other Press cable matter. ,
