A WORD OF WARNIN G
AGAINST VOCATIONAL "TRAINING ."."■
A' note of warningl against taking too seriously the cry -for vocational training was uttered by Professor J. 'Shelley in his address, on the future of education, last night. ■ *■ Jn the case of most children, he dedared, no vocational training whatever was needed. ' There was need for professional training for some occupations, and there, was need for picking out by some weans or other the people who would best profit by, special/vocational training. Vlt was of no use sending children to school for seven years to fit them to tend machines. In New; Zealand there were 7\ per cent, of mentally deficient people, but 20 per cent, of the jobs in industry could be filled by mental defectives. "Education is more or less in the air at the moment," said Professor Shelley, "and possibly some changes in - the system are going to be made. But. I want to raise my voice in opposition to the idea of any very-great importance being given to vocational training. I don't say it should be neglect- "• ed altogether, but I do- say it will tend to'turn human beings into machines.?'
