FEAR OF FAGGING
ENGLISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS
VICAR'S SON BANGS HIMSELF
LONDON, 10th May. A striking contrast to New Zealand school conditions was revealed at an inquest on a 14-year-old boy, Charles Fairhurst, son of the vicar of Barrowford, who hanged himself the- day before he was due to return to Sedburg)^ the famous North of England public school. His father informed the Coroner that his son committed suicide- by hanging in his bedroom, fearing "fagging," especially as prefects had a right to thrash youngsters who did not carry out fagging properly.; : Mr. Graham Sniitlf, headmaster >at Sedbufgh, in evidence, said that there was nothing torriblo or derogatory in "fagging." It merely taught small boys kabits of prompt obedience and cleanliness. Prefects could only punish to the ' of two strokes. Pairhurst was never punished. - The jui"3r, in returning its verdict, added: 'Tagging, iiu public schools should be abolished." , ...
Canon Sawyer, headmaster .at Shrewsbury, states that he thinks controlled fagging is a most valuable training. ■,
