ROWING ON THE MURRAY

INTERSTATE EIGHTS

SYDNEY, 11th May. The aquatic championships wererowed on the Murray River at Mannuin on Saturday in perfect weather on a straight three-mile reach that provided a glass-like surface. Huge crowds witnessed tho events, which attracted visitors from all States. Results were as follow: — AMATEUR SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA. J. R. Scott (New South Wales) 1 A. Buckley (Queensland) , 2 R. Jelbart (Victoria) 3 The other starter was R. Beauchamp (Tasmania). Won by fifteen lengths. Time, 15niiu 56seC; KING'S CUP INTER-STATE EIGHTS. Victoria (average weight 12st 41b) 1 New South Wales (12st lib) 2 Queensland (lOst 61b) ....... 3 The other starters were: Tasmania (12st 51b), South Australia (list 4Jlb), and West Australia (list 61b). All were well together over the first half-mile, with New South Wales and Victoria leading, and West Australia prominent. By the time the journey was half over the boats were in two distinct divisions, New .South ' Wales and Victoria fighting sturdily, with Queensland closely pursuing and making one or two efforts which looked promi«ing. At the end of the second mil* West Australia dropped out and the leaders were straining every nerve. New South Wales still had a canvas advantage, but the Victoria men seemed to be rowing well within themselves, while the Sydney men began to show signs of tiring. When a quarter of a mile from home, however, they put forth an horoie effort and quickened tho pace, but Victoria, lasting the better, forged ahead, and won in a great finish by three-quarters of a length. Queensland was fifteen lengths away third, with Tasmania fourth and South Australia far back. Time, 16mm 47 sec. WOMEN'S INTER-STATE FOURS.
