SMALL HOLDINGS

THE GOVERNMENT'S WISH

(Special to "The Evening Post.") CHBISTCIiURCI-I, Bth May. During the hearing of a deputation from tomato and fruit growers and other small holders, the Minister of Internal Affairs (tho Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) stated the Government's wish to put unemployed men on small holdings, and hinted that an area of land for that purpose might be obtained near Christehurch. Ho could say that Sir Joseph Ward was determined to popularise small holdings. Ono of tho hopes for the relief of the unemployed was to givo the men close to centres of population small holdings of their own, not that they could necessarily make a living from the land, but so that they might have homes for their wives and families even if they had to find seasonal work elsewhere. If. representations could bo made from the Christehurch district for an area of land for this purpose, Sir Joseph Ward would certainly give them. every consideration. ''
