TIMBER ACCUMULATES

SAWMILLS REDUCE HOURS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAMILTON, 17th April. At the monthly meeting at Hamilton of the- Sawmillcrs' Timber Trading Co., Ltd., representing over forty sawmills in th© Eotorua and Main Trunk districts, it was unanimously resolved, owing to the diminishing demand for New Zealand timber and the heavy accumulation stores at the sawmills, that it would'be necessary to close the mills for nearly two weeks during the Easter period, and to reduce the working time from 47 hours to 40 hours per week, after that period at all mills. This is a reduction of approximately 13 per cent, in the hours worked per week. One of the principal factors which it is stated makes this step necessary is the large proportion of foreign timber, mostly from America, and, if timber from this source continues to increase,'as it has done for the last few months, it is anticipated that a further reduction of working hours will bo necessary. :
