NEW MOTOR SERVICE A PIONEER 0? TRANSPORT (From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 17th April. Yesterday Mr. T.: Newman was the central figure at Murchison when the new Picton-West Coast motor route over Tophouse wa3 officially opened in the presence of representatives from Marlborough, Nelson, and "West Coast. As one speaker remarked at the dinner given to celebrate the occasion, the firm, of Newman Bros, is the pioneer of transport in the northern part of the South Island, and its name a household word throughout • the Dominion. "Well-deserved tributes were paid by all the speakers to the firm of Newman Bros, for the way it had' developed the transport system, and special mention was made. : of Mr. T. Newman, chairman of directors, and to his son Jack, managing director, for the manner in which the services were maintained, and to the progressive policy maintained by the firm in developing the transport system' in this end of the South Island. The function proved a most happy and successful one. Mr. E. r. Healey, M.P. for Wairau, presided at the dinner, being supported by Mr. T. Newman (the host) and Mr. Jones, Mayor of Picton. The following .were the principal speakers:—Mr. J.'Hv'Harkness, Mayor of "Westport, Mr. "W. J. Moffatt, Mayor of Nelson, Mr. Jories, Mayor of Picton, Mr. H. Stewart, chairman, of the Murchison County Council, Mr. T. Patterson, chairman of the Beef ton Progress League; Mr. E. ( F. Healey, M.P. for "Wairau, and Mr. Girling, of Blenheim. '"' Mr. Jack Newman and Mr. T. Newman tendered thanks for the remarks concerning the firm. The former did not think the new .route would take away any_ traffic -from Nelson. The new route* would be the means of opening up a certain part of this end of tho Island for private people. Of course, the, benefit' of the new route would not be fully felt until the Buller Gorge was again opened up, possibly in two months' time. An. interesting little ceremony terminated the proceedings. Across the road were stretched three bands of red, white, and blue ribbon, representing the three districts concerned. Messrs. Healey (Marlborough), Harkness ("West Coast), and Moffatt (Nelson), behind whom'were gathered the various delegates, then cut the ribbons simultaneously, and the new route was declared open. Mr. A. M'Kendry, who has been manager of the "Waimea Dairy Factory for several years past, is being retained by the company as manager of the Appleby branch factory which will be engaged in • the manufacture of cheese only. During Easter the Baptist- Bible Classes of Nelson and Eichmond are holding a united camp at the Richmond Show Grounds. Between 70 and 80 Bible Class members will be in camp, the majority of whom will go in this evening. A small contingent is also arriving from Wellington to-mor-row. The leading speakers will be Dr. Minnie Varley, of Nelson, the Rev. Adam Clarke, an evangelist and Bible teacher of, over twenty-five years' ex-j perienee, and Mr. Paul Giiinnessj youngest son of the world-famed Dr. Grattan Guinness, -The camp disbands
