SHORT SKIRT FIGHT

"SENSIBLE DRESS SOCIETY" (From "The Post's" • Representative.) -LONDON-, 13th March. The. Sensible Dress .Society has been formed at Liverpool, its intention being to combat the introduction of : . long skirts. A woman barrister, two solicitors, and two doctors are' on the temporary committee appointed at a meeting held, at the ihome of' Mrs. BessieHarris, the founder of the society, at Hunt's Cross. •" ■■■■■■.■'■ Mr. R. Walter Harris', the honorary treasurer, states:—Short' skirts originated in Great Britain and have been adopted all over the world, and we protest against the domination of Paris in the matter of women's dress. Short skirts are artistic, graceful, anil hygienic. Long skirts, which have already, been introduced for evening wear,, will inevitably extend to day. wear if unopposed. Manufacturers will not benefit" so much as they, expect from the revival of ..the. long dress, becauso women of moderate incomes will be un; Jlc to buy as many dresses as they do now. The aim of this vsociety is to resist not , only, the long skirt, but any other inconvenient fashion. Miss 'Harris says her mother has received letters from women all over the country offering to support the new movenn/:t. One has to bear in mind that tho young people of .to-day never have experienced the drawbacks of .long dresses, and they are not eager to do so. Sho wonders why anything should be prefixed by the little word "too"— there is no reason why tho happy medium should not bo adopted, in which idoal state no skirt could bo too long, too short, or too skimpy. Tho cheeseparing of fabric for tweed skirts seems to be becoming accentuated, many of tho cheaper new ones of the mass-production type .having no hem at all—merely a line of blanket stitchery to keep the edge from fraying. This stinginess is not.good for the- Yorkshire, and Lancashire mills. It has no feature- to recommend it.
