QUESTION OF SITE
EXITS FROM THEATRES
The monthly meeting oil the Wellington Fire Board was held to-day. The meeting was, by resolution, declared the annual meeting. On the motion of Air. S. S. Dean, seconded by Mr. Marcus Marks, Mr. N. 'W. Nelson was unanimously re-elect-ed chairman, and heartily thanked for his services during the past year. Th» other members and officers present were Messrs. 0. D. Morpeth, A. Parton, JNI. F. Luckie, J. Creckb (superintendent), and F. S. Fairchild (secretary). It was reported that the estimates for the ensuing year, amounting to £30,400, had been submitted to -tna Minister of Internal Affairs. The superintendent reported that tn» total number of calls attended by th. Wellington Fire Brigade during lebruary was 73, classified as follows: Property fires, 13; chimney fires, 1; gom>, grass, and rubbish fires, SS; justifiable false alarms, 14; malicious false alarms 7 For the eleven months ending 28th February, 1930, the total number o« calls attended was 6SG, as .against 507 in the corresponding period of last year. Those were classified as follows (the comparative figures for 19.9 being given in parentheses): P'OP?'^ fires, 211 (2i5); chinllie- y il' C|' 7 (i-l' gorse. grass, and rubbish fires, lo.i (120); justifiable false alarms, 16* (114 V malicious false alarms, S2 (46). During February one fire was extinguished by motor pump, one by hand pump,1 two by chemical extinguishers, 11 by hydrants, 9 by buckets, and -3 by other means. • ■ It was decided to hold a special meeting at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday next to discuss the question of the site of the Central Fire Station. The board approved the suggestion, that the superintendent should confer with the City Engineer (Mr. fcr. A. Hart) with regard to the exits and entrances of picture theatres and other PUMr° Seated that the matter was already receiving consideration at the hands of the City Council. The board discussed at some length the- question of the city's building bylaws in connection with fire prevention, the suggestion being made that in the ]i<rht of the fruit markets fire the bylaws needed revision. It was suggested also that the use of fire-sprinkWrs. in big buildings should *o made compulsory. _____________
