BRAVE SOLDIER

BUT POOR CIVILIAN

AUCKLAND, 7th March,

Described by his counsel as an excellent soldier, but a rotten civilian, Henry Bay Vercce, aged 48, a half-eastc Maori, was .to-day sentenced by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to six months' imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months' reformative treatment, on eight charges of obtaining £36 by means of valueless cheques. Vercoe served in the South African War and the Great War. His counsol stated that in the Court that very, morning Mr. Tole, the incoming president of the Law Society, had informed him that Vercoe was the bravest man he- ever saw at the front, and he had recommended him' for the Victoria Cross. Vercoe owned 2000 acres of land, and was to have received £.300 from the Native Land Court, but recently the matter was held up by somo proclamation. He w,as convicted of false pretences in 1912, 1922, and 1928.
