WALKERS AND ROADS

(To.the Editor.)

Sir,—The paragraph in "The Post" of Thursday evening brings to the notice of the authorities the great inconvenience that compulsory, pedestrians are compelled to suffer. I was glad to see the Hutt Valley mentioned, because in many places a fairly long walk cannot be avoided when train service does not fit. For example: The road between Belmont and Melling to the Hutt—a most necessary walk very often, a very enjoyable one too, as far as vision is concerned, but not for the feet—is narrow, I know, but how much even an 18-inch pfoper footpath would be welcomed only the foot passengers" could tell. The authorities may remember a fairly large sum expended on the road beyond the station recently. It was mentioned that the residents would appreciate the improvement. There is no reason for rejoicing. The road is in a worse condition than formerly; stones as large as eggs to walk upon, not to mention the points! Those that benefit by the so-called improvements are the motorists, who do not have to trudge the road daily. The road is" widened, true, and that is all. Walking, to many,' would be a real pleasure, valuable to health as an exercise, but the condition of the roads forces them to remain at home. There are many beauties around us, but we sadly realise they are for motorists only. I trust that the paragraph * will be the means of drawing attention to the needs of the pedestrian.—l am, etc., WALKER. Belmont, 6th February.
