CORRESPONDENCE

GEAK, LSLxIND

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Doubtless your readers have had quite enough of "Gear Island," and I, for one, have no desire to prolong the correspondence, my only excuse for trespassing further on your space being to reply to the attack wi myself ii your issve of the sth instant over the signature T. L. Barker. This correspondent refers to my actions during the recent River Board election campaign. I would like to emphasise that my actions were fully endorsed by my committee and justified by its "desire to establish a local aerodrome free of cost to the ratepayers—an object which I have no doubt will be fully appreciated in the very near future not only by the residents o£ the valley but also by the board members themselves. It is regrettable that certain members of the board should have associated me and my committee with sinister motives, and allowed the .personal bitterness manifested to interfere with the progress of the valley and the pockets of the ratepayers. . The only regrets my committee hay and I share them to the full—arefthat one candidate, whose publicly declared policy was "easement of rates" and whom they loyally supported, should, on taking his scat on the board, have failed to support the proposals to lease 'the island to the highest tenderers.—l am, etc., A. W. NISBET, Hon. Secretary, Hutt Valley Branch Wellington Aero Club. 6th Marcli. (To the Editor.) Sir,—l should like the opportunity of thanking you for your courtesy in. extending to me the facilities which you did in respect of the'controversy over the leasing of Gear Island. It was a question of much concern to many of your readers, but to others it may possibly have been in danger of becoming wearisome. Your correspondent, Mr. C. R. Barrett, in last night's issue of "The Post" points out an error in my conclusions which I freely admit, and I also at the same time concede to him credit for the full measure of success achieved by him in his efforts on behalf of the aviation, movement; in short, he wins but I triumph.—l am, etc., T. L. BARKER. 7th March.
