ENDOWING MIDWIFERY CHAIR

An active campaign in the city for funds to endow the Chair of Obstetrics: at the New Zealand Medical School was arranged last evening at a meeting of ladies in the Town Hall. The cam* paign in Wellington City is part, of a Dominion movement. Lady Buckleton presided. Enthusiasm and businessiiko methods characterised the proceedings. Statements made by Lady Buckleton i and Mrs, Lewis', of .Hastings, showed that active steps al'6 being taken in numerous centres throughout the Wellington district,' Which, for this purpose, includes the southern half of the North Island. A number of Biibstantial cheques have been given and others have boon promised, so ttiat the collection of Wellington's -qildta, £7500, of tho total amount aimed at for the Dominion, £25,000, seems aa* stood. The special business of the meeting last evening was that of inaking arrangements for a canvass Of the City for the disposal of shilling coupons, which arrangement will make ii; simpler ; for all to contribute according to their means. The reports from Auckland and Otago show that the —raisiflg oftheir quota is assured. . Mrs. M'Viear submitted plans: for the division of the city into sections and streets. '• Lady Luke agreed to form a committee for Wellington South, and will be assisted by Miss Bagley (matron df St. Helens Hospital) and other ladies, in that district. ■ Lady Buekleton said that four short addressos- would be broadcasted during the next two Weeks by medical practitioners; and a coloured slide with part of the Queen's message would be shown at several of the picture theatres. Mrs. Lewis gave an account of the measures in active progress in the Hawkes Bay and Main Trunk line districts. . Meetings had been held at Taihape and Wairoa as well as in centres further south. Progress reports from country districts will be published on 15th March, and tho campaign will end on 27th March. , ' -
