"MEAN THEFT"
RETURN FOR KINDNESS
"A mean type of theft," was the description given by Sub-Inspector Lander to an offence to which Ernest Henry Leaity, a labourer, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Ho was charged with stealing a silver wristlet watch, valued at £3, the property of Walter Lewis, The complainant took Leaity, who was then unemployed, into his home and kept him for several days, said the Sub-Inspector.' He started to drink heavily, and Lewis was forced to turn him out, 7t was afterwards found that a watch and other articles" were missing. The matter was reported to the police, and when Leaity was arrested some time later on a charge of vagrancy a pawn ticket was found in his possession. This ticket showed that a watch had been pawned, and it was found that the watch was the stolen one. The accused denied having stolen anything else, but it was probable that he had taken other goods to get money with which to buy drink. A sentence of three months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr. E. Page, S.M.
