. —♦—» — DUTY ON WHEAT ABOLITION URGED * (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Oth March. The poultrymen's conference was continued to-day. - A remit that all egss be sold by weight in lieu of by the dozen was referred to the committee. A remit urging upon the Government the necessity for the repeal of the wheat duties, on the ground that they imposed an unfair burden on the community and were an unfair handicap to the poultry industry, and 'also one advocating (in view of the fact that the Government had not seen its way to remove the duty from wheat) that some form of poultry wheat pooling be instituted to ensure North Island poultry-keepers getting wheat at a. figure more in accord with tho price paid by South Island poultry-keepers, was referred to the executive to take whut action it thought best. Remits in regard to imported eggs, urging that a request be made to the Government to provide greater protection against imported eggs until sucli time as wheat for poultry could be admitted free of duty, or that the Government be asked to afford protection from imported eggs by way ot a sliding scale tariff similar to the wheat duty, or that the Government be requested to prohibit importation of eggs in shell during the currency of the present prohibitive tariff on wheat, were referred to the executive. The following motion was carried:— "That until the proposed grading laws are effectively established the Government be asked to provide a subsidy on all eggs actually exported from New Zealand by the first week in November, either f.o.b. or on consignment." ■: In lieu of remits urging compulsory grading, the following motion was passed: "That this conference approves •of the principle of compulsory grading as soon as it can practically be applied." A_ remit that the Government be asked to investigate the Control Board system operating in New South Wales, with a view to adopting it in New Zealand, was adopted. Remits were adopted in regard to egglaying competitions, one of them being that the Government be asked to increase the subsidy to egg-laying contests to £200----per annum. A remit that "This meeting of delegates of ,the New Zealand Poultry Association adopt the utility standard as drawn up by the conference in Wellington of North and South Island Poultry Associations, with the exception of the. clause relating to white in the face being made a cause of disqualification for all breeds except adult Minorcas," was adopted, and referred to the executive to take the necessary action. . Poultry wearing sealed rings are to be allowed entry in poultry shows.
