MONEY BY FRAUD
"PROFESSIONAL BOXER'S" STOEY
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 6th March. The story of a youth who represented himself as a professional boxer for tho purpose of obtaining money from two acquaintances was told in the Onohunga Magistrate's Court when Sydney Gordon Eoss, aged 20, was charged with fraudulently obtaining £9 10s from Albert Waters and £5 from Frank Waters. The accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant O'Neill said the complainants came to Onehunga about two months ago on a visit from Port Waikato. They met the accused, who frequently boasted to them of his prowess as a boxer. He told them that the Te Awamutu Boxing Association had engaged him to fight for a cup, medal, and purse of £40 and invited them to accompany him. He asked them for some money to back himself and pay expenses. The complainants gave him £14 10s. On the following day the accused went to a race meeting and spent the money. When he was accosted by the complainants on the day of the supposed fight he told them he had injured his hand and tho contest was postponed. They waited in vain for further word from him and eventually put the matter in the hands of the police. Eoss was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make full restitution and pay costs, £1 os 6d.
