WOMAN RESCUED

IN WATER AT DAY'S BAY

Just after the ferry steamer Cobar had drawn in to the Day's Bay Wharf about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a' middle-aged woman, Mrs. Emily Wrigley, of 127, Ghuznec street, was seen floating in the water. She was rescued in a very exhausted condition, and, after artificial respiration had been applied, she was taken to the Wellington Hospital. Her condition is serious. It is stated that there are several witnesses who saw Mrs. Wrigley jump into the water from the starboard side of the steamer. Some children looking into the water attracted the attention of the engineer, Mr. John F. Kirk. When, on going to the side of the ship, he saw the woman in the water, he immediately dived in to rescue her. He was joined a little later by Mr. J. Orme, another member of the crew, and with the assistance of a lifebuoy and a line thrown from the wharf, Mrs. Wrigley was brought to the wharf steps. Restorative measures were applied, and after the woman had recovered somewhat she was taken to the Day's Bay pavilion, where she was given further attention until the arrival of Dr. Bakewell and the ambulance. Constable Squires, of Eastbourne, accompanied the woman in the ambulance to the hospital. . . Apparently Mrs. Wrigley lost consciousness very quickly in the water, and when Mr. Kirk and Mr. Orme went to her assistance she was beyond struggling. The rescue was watched by a large crowd.
