U.S. ONION TARIFF
AUCKLAND GROWERS ALARMED
(By Telegraph.) (Sjiecial to "The Evening- Post.") •AUCKLAND, This Day. . The introduction of. a higher tariff in the United States for imported onions is viewed with concern by Auckland growers. The duty on New Zealand onions imported'into tho United States is now equivalent to £0 4s a ton. The new tariff, it is stated, is prohibitive to New Zealand exporters and witli 'local markets glutted with onions there is little prospect of a successful year for growers. Several largo shipments of onions were sent from Auckland to the United States last year. Now Zealand tariffs for imported onions are £,1 a ton for British imports, and £1 10s a ton for foreign. Thus New Zealand imports: large :supplies of American onions' in ~tho off season, and has previously balanced: her trade by exporting onions to America and Caii"da in the autumn when New Zealand stocks are -very beayyv:,•! '77 ,7A member of a city auctioneering firm stated that the introduction of ICinpire preference as -proposed by Lord' Beaverbrook would assist New Zealand oiiioii growers as they "could then fliid.a; .'g'pod'j'niarkct in Canada. ..At'present,' however, "New Zealand was handicapped because the United States could "readily "dump" large stocks of onions •aver the. Canadian border*
