ACTION WANTED
ACCOUNTANCY RESEARCH
The grant of 100 guineas by the council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants as a bursary for research, was criticised by several delegates at the conference this morning as working out at loss than day labourer's wages for the likely to be put into it. A remit by the Wellington branch calling for the organisation Of research projects led to an interesting discussion. One speaker, while appreciating the action of the council in putting up funds, thought that if members were too strictly concerned with S.s.d. in research, the wrong spirit would be shown, and others agreed that the spirit of research was not a matter of money at all, the reward consisting in the benefits to others.
"What are we going to do about it?" asked Mr. Valintine. "It has been said that we have come to exercise the same influence on the health of commerce as the medical profession has on that of the general public. Are we merely going to accept that encouraging state of affairs? A great number of important matters have been discussed, and the direction of the lines on which action could be taken has been agreed upon. Arc we going to take ajiy definite steps, or are we, as is so frequently the case at those conferences, going to let the matter drop? We are inclined to be too much concerned with the routine of administration."
Eventually it was decided that, in order to encourage accountancy research, steps should be taken to set up a research committee.
