NELSON NEWS

A FERGUSSON STREET

PROBLEM OF SELECTION

(From Our Own Correspondent)

NELSON, 7th February,

At a meeting of the Nelson City Council tho Electrical Engineer reported that tho number of units sold during December, 1929, totalled 91,080, compared with 68,035 for tho corresponding period of 1928, an increase of 22,595. The revenue for the same period showed an increase of £305 14s 3d, tho figures being £1620 14s lOd for December, 1929, and £1261 0s 7d for 1928.- ' A notice of motion standing in tho name of Councillor S. Moynagh to the effect >that Now street be changed in name to. Fergusson street to mark the council's appreciation of the great services rendered New Zealand by the retiring Governor-General was considered.' In the absenco of Councillor Moynagh, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Moffatt) moved the motion, which was seconded pro forma by Councillor George Page., The Mayor wondered if New street was of sufficient importance to be associated with tho -name of Sir Charles Fergusson. Councillor Wash bourn suggested that the portion of Halifax street west'of the Maitai river be substituted. Tho street at present was divided by the river and caused some confusion. -Councillor Huggins's proposal was that the name Trafalgar street south bo changed to Fergusson street. The Governor-General had laid tho foundation stono of the new Cathedral, and Trafalgar street south led up to the main entrance of the edifice. It would be appropriate, therefore, if the street was associated with the name of His Excellency. A suggestion by Councillor Russell was that the Trafalgar street bridge bo named Fergusson bridge. Tho .'matter was held over till tho next meeting. Mrs. T. Batty, of Waimea road, overbalanced over a railing at her home yesterday when shaking a carpet and fell to the ground. Sho suffered a severe cut on the head, necessitating her removal to .hospital. Her condition today was satisfactory. . . - At the Nelson Rifle Association's annual championship meeting held at Tapawora L. C. Balck won the district championship, with J. Vitetta runnerup. The concluding match was very interesting, as only"a ,few points separated the leaders. L. C Balck finished first at COO yards with 42, leaving J. Vitetta to get 45 and F. Sharland 46 to win,'whilst Wi A. .Kenning had-to make 49. Vitetta wanted a bull on' his last shot, but missed by a fraction. Sharland followed with 44, and Kenning, with a great efeort, reached 47, leaving Balck and Vitetta a tie' for first place and Sharland and Kenning a tie for second. In tho shoot off, five shots over 600 yards, Balck beat Vitetta by. two points and Kenning won from Sharland. L. C. Balck is a son of Mr. J. F. Balek, of Woodstock, who won the championship belt three years ago. Balek, junr., also won the Territorial championship belt this year. Tho A grade aggregates were as follows:—L. C.
