"DOPING" ATHLETES

ALLEGATIONS IN AUSTRALIA

MELBOURNE, This Day.

Extraordinary allegations were made by Mr. J. W. Schafe, stipendiary steward and handicapper to the Victorian Athletic League, at a meeting of this body, concerning the administration of deadly drugs to runners without their knowledge by their trainers. "This cursed practice," he said, "is increasing. Tho usual method is to givo them a drink before the race. The drink contains a drug which eventually undermines them mentally and physically."

Mr. J. Bull, secretary of tho league, srtid that cases camo under his notice where sprint runuprs received "tho necdlo" under UK arm and where middle-distance runners received the ncedlo in the knees.

It was decided to hold a searching investigation.
