"WET" VIEWS AND "DRY"
CONTROVERSY IN AMERICA
(ltccoivcd 3rd February, S a.m.) WASHINGTON, Ist February. A consensus of '' wet and '' dry opinion in and out of Congress to-day opposed Mr. Fort's proposals for Volstead clarification. Representative Lohlbaeh, a noted "wot" said, "There is only one way honestly and sincerely to enforce Prohibition, and that is to drop shams ana subterfugo and declare the user of alcoholic beverages a criminal and turn our- enforcement forces against him. In this way we have a certain and prompt show-down of Prohibition.'' Senators Shepherd and Borah, "drys," characterised Fort's interpretations as "amounting to nullification." Senator Whitehouse declared informally that Fort was not speaking for President Hoover.' Prohibition Commissioner Dorau said: "Few people make beer fit to drink and soon tire of it." The association against the "Eighteenth, Amendment issued a statement declaring Fort ,'illitterate,' a- concerns the constitution, and the modification he proposes is, illegal."
