VANDALISM IN ALPINE GARDEN

I am, etc., : r * . . INDIGNANT CITIZEN. ■ 3rd 'February. •' . ■ , ■'.-■'■ ■

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Yesterday I paid a special visit to Wilton's. Bush in order1 to see. how the Gresley Lukin Alpine. Garden was getting on. While I was more than pleased with the fine variety of our glorious alpine flora planted there and to see how well the plants were, becoming established', I' was shocked, to see several- conspicuous acts of vandalism that have been perpetrated there and iiave been permitted to remain" by the municipal authorities. Onthiee of the large" stones certain texts had been painted in\ whitewash in large lettering. ■-. . . .-■ .: In a singularly beautiful spot, dedicated to the memory of a man who served Wellington and humanity so well, it was painful to see these inscriptions plastered on the rocks in poster fashion and so out of keeping with the whole surroundings. When will these people learn that the plastering of such texts in-public resorts is wholly out of place arid.does more harm, than good, and how long are the civic authorities' going ■to permit these unsightly inscriptions to remain? ,As one who had the honour of knowing Mr. Lukin,. who was. always a. vigorous • opponent of any acts o£ vandalism,-1 protest in his name, and trust that-the civic authorities will not be slow in taking the necessary action.
