M.C.C. v. HAWKES BAY

DULEEPSLNHJPS BIG' StiORE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 1 : ' ' NAPIER,'2nd February. 'Perfect .conditions prevailed for .the commencement, of the M.C.O.'s. .match against Hawkes Bay yesterday. The wicket was hard and fast..

When Gilligan won the toss he decided to bat, and then for the remainder of the day the largest crowd at a cricket match in Napier for several years saw a fine exhibition of batting by the Englishmen, particularly Duleepsirihji, who gave easily his best .display on the tour. His batting was un -education and the manner in which- he1 played his strokes on both sides of tho wickets" was a treat to watch. Every stroke had the finish and polish of a cricketer of high class. For his 242 he was at the wickets 189 minutes and he made 41 boundary shots.

When Hawkes Bay secured the first three wickets for 107 runs prospects looked promising, but it was Duleepsinlvji and Benson who put a different complexion on the game. The latter .was content to rjlay very steadily while his partner made the runs. Benson reached 55."in ■. 107 minutes before he went out Ibw. The partnership realised 210, runs..; ..After Gilligan and Duleepsinhji, went the batsmen went for the bowling; Nichols's 46 was. an attractive one; and then Woolley and Earle put on 50 in 14 minutes. Earle!s total of 40' included five 6's.' He showed himself to be a very powerful hitter. Both he and Woolley were caught oij the boundary when attempting: big hits. A word of:,praise is due to the Hawkes Bay eleven for the excellence of, their fielding. They had a heavy day's work,

but if the batsmen guvo any chances at all they were accepted. . Hawkes Bay, with only fifteen minutes to go, opened the innings- disastrously, O'Brien chopping the first ball received from Nichols into, his wicket. Evans and Stephenson then played-out time ' and added fifteen runs. Detailed scores are as follow:— M.C.O.—First innings.
