KELBURN VIADUCT
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Some little time ago there appeared in your paper two designs of the Kelbuvn Viaduct, a pylon design by the City Engineer's Department, and an arch design by My. S. F. Silver, consulting engineer. There is no doubt that the. arch is the more artistic-looking job, and according to Mr. Silver can be built for £6000 less than the other. It is now reported that the City Council is proceeding with the work, presumably on the original pylon design, and if so it seems to me that they, the Mayor and councillors, should let ratepayers more into their confidence and explain why they are spending £6000 more on this job than they need do* Have they carefully considered this arch scheme? Why; not give the poor rate-
payers some information? There is always an impression that municipal works cost much more than they should, but it is not often that somebn'e with the knowledge and experience cornea out in the open and gives us something definite as in this case, and it seems to me that not sufficient attention has been paid to tha ! economic design of this viaduct. —I am, etc.,
RATEPAYER.
[Thci viaduct is, as the correspondent presumes, being built to the pylon design prepared by the City Engineer's Department. Mr. Silver's letter was referred to the Mayor at the time the arch design was proposed, but he had no statement to make.]
