AT TAKAPUNA
PRODICE'S CUP.
LADY QUEX WINS SPRINT
(By Telegraph from "Vedette.")
•., The Takapuna Jockey Club had great weather for the opening of its Cup Meeting yesterday, -which being Anniversary. Day in Auckland and a public : holiday, saw the enclosures well filled, The course was ill firtt-class order after a" good shower _of rain on the previous evening. Speculation was good, the day's turnover, £45,613 10s, being an increase of £3909 on last year."
The racing in general was free from the incident peculiar to this course, although one horse had to be destroyed through breaking his shoulder while contesting a race; ■' This was Mr. W. E. Bidwill's promising half-brother to Suggestion, Relation, inJ. T. Jamieson's stable. He suddenly faltered about four fhrlongs from home, when going well in behind the leader*, and Voitre pulled him up. He was destroyed with considerable dispatch. Hayaspot on. any ordinary course would not have been beaten, in his race, but otherwise the results were not unduly fluky, although barrier positions made »ome difference.
There was a peculiar accident while the Tiorses were out doing their preliminary for the Calliope Handicap. Topstar, ridden by C. Eastwood, went down with Sub-editor, ridden: -by H. Gray. Topstar was hanging on to Gray's mount, and when Grey's horse forged ahead Topstar galloped on the heels of Sub-editor and fell. t , Eastwood, on Topstar, received a bad fall, his injuries being concussion and a, broken collarbone.
'■: ~ Prodice won the Cup in good style after "feeing - perfectly placed all the way, and well ridden by Ay E. Ellis. After a series of failures, Lady Quex showed her real ■form in the sprint event, outclassing the Held. She goes home to-night, and will contest the Taranaki Stakes next week, She is in ;fine form at present.
TRIAL STAKES.
The On Top-Measurer bracket was fay-
ourite, with good support for the Nassau :. ?■ Ladyj?rirjcipal Boy bracket. Both, winner -.•■-; and-runner-up were at good prices, Chro- ,, .. madyne at over a third of a century to , , v "win..'. :Sir Mond, Honiton, and New Boy . / began,. best,.. and Honiton and Principal Boy led'at the end of.-two furlongs from ; On.Top, New Boy, Sir Mond, Neil, Chroinaayne. Helium was right up fourth, and S.ir Mond, Loving Cup, Neil, and On Top
Honiton jumped out well and stayed the distance in good style. New Boy is liable .to do better soon. Even though he held a decent position all the way, Helhim'a performance was good, for he! drew 21 at the barrier. Sir Mond, considering he was as fat as a prize bull, ran a great race. Nassau Lady, who drew 16 at the barrier, was always in the rear of the strungrout field. Horses with inside barrier positions like the winner and "New Boy had a decided advantage.
OREWA HIGHWEIGHT
Cybele, Wenday, and Luminary were the favourites in a good betting race. Golden Wedding and Wenday were left hopelessly, and Luminary led out of the straight, from King's Guard, Quinconia, Harbour View, and Cybele; Luminary opened up a break of six of Seven lengths going round the back, tliemearest to him being King's Guard, Cybele, and Quincoma, with Wenday making up . her ground. King's Guard closed on Luminary at the turn, with Cybele and Wenday handy. Luminaiy held off King's Guard in a bumping finish to beat him by a head.- . Cybele was three- lengths away -tliird, with Wenday fourth and Quincoma, Mashoor, and'Serar.g next. . Luminary's rider took a risk by the ..way. he handled his rriount, taking him so far to the front, as ho had little1 in reserve in the final struggle with King'B Guard, who had none the best of . the bumping finish. Cybele went a decent race, but by the way Wenday finished she would have been hard to beat with an equal start. Quincoma went a fair.race. There was an inquiry into the bumping in the straight, but no action was taken.
ZEALANDIA HANDICAP.
Sir Eussell was a pronounced favourite, but the winner turned up in Mithra at a long price.. Monsogne and Cynthia N began smartly with Sir Eussell, but White Wings soon moved up, and with Cynthia ;N led round the back from Mithra, .Monsogne, Sir Eussell, and Gemlight. Sir • Kuss'ell was badly placed near the Htlfraile, but moved up smartly. Cyntliia N and White Wings just led Monsogne, Sir HusseTl, and Mithra going to the turn. Sir Russell headed White Wings nearing the post, but Mithra came with a fast run to win convincingly by half a length from Sir Russell, who just staved off the fast-fin-ishing Maori Boy. by a neck. White Wings waa a good fourth, Monsogne and Arikit'oa riext,. 'Mithra finished very.wqll down the short straight, "but Maori Boy's, effort .was outstanding) for he came from a long way batik. TAKAPUNA CUP,
Royal Doulton, Prodice, and Lucy Rose were all well backed. Corinax and Eager Rose began best, with In the Shade tailed off. Eager Rose and Corinax led down the straight from Prodice, Le Choucas, Lucy Rose, Hipo, and Plying Juliet together, with Royal Doulton in behind the bunch. Eager Rose and Corinax led round the back from Prodice and Flying Juliet, with Royal Doulton and Lucy Rose next. Transformer and In the Shade commenced to move up at the half-mile, where Eager Rose and Corinax still led and showed the way to the turn from Prodice, Royal Doulton, Le Choucas, and Transformer. Prodice was up with Corinax and Eager Rose as they straightened up, and under pressure over the last 100 yards she came on to beat Corinax by a neck. Royal Doulton was three-quarters of a-length back third. Eager Rose was a good fourth, and In the Shade, Le Choucas, Hipo, Lucy Rose, and High Pitch followed '.t intervals.
Prodice finished full of running when A. E. Ellis took up his whip, and she scored in impressive style. Corinax raced Eager Rose all the way, and this did not improve his chance. Royal Doulton was most patiently handled and had every "chance. In the Shade made a very belated and very good effort, and nothing finished better. Lucy Rose looked a trifle burly, and was beaten at the end o£ a mile. Eager Rose ran a particularly good race after forcing the pace all the way. Le Choucas gave a fair display.
FERRY HANDICAP.
Relation was backed down to .a very short price, Tuku winning at decent odds. Quinsilia began very smartly, but Tuku and Awamutu soon took charge from Carl Idem, Crimestor, Biddy's Comet,' Monaloff, and Relation. Tuku and Awamutu led at the half-mile from Carl Idem, Crimestor, Biddy's Comet, and Volimond, Relation dropping right back. Tuku, :Carl_ldem, Awamutu, Crimestor,' Vohmond, .mddjrs Comet, and Tetrachate were' the leaders at the turn. Tuku came on and won easily by two lengths from Volimond, who beat.Carl Idem by a length- and a half. Crimestor was fourth, and Haviland, Tetrachate, Some Lady, and Biddy's Comet were next. Tuku from No. 17 at the barrier began very smartly, and stayed on too well for the opposition. Volimond also put up' a good performance from an outside barrier position. Both Crimestor and Carl Idem were always prominent, but Tetrachate did not get into the picture until the turn was reached, and his was a fair effort. Biddy's Comet and Haviland ran decent races. Awamutu went well for six furlongs.
CALLIOPE HANDICAP.
Hard Words, with whom Smithfield was coupled on the totalisator, was backed down to odds on. Foot Bule began very smartly, and with Hard Words led at the half-mile from Tremetus and Set Fair, with Full Measure and Bells of Shandon next. Hard Words turned for home just ahead of Set Fair and Tremetus, with Bells of Shandcn, Full Measure, and Silene next. Hard Words had to be shaken up to stall off Tremetus by three-quarters of a length. Full Measure was'two lengths ■ away third. Set Fair was fourth, and Bells of Shandon, Silene, and Foot Kule next.
Hard Words won as his Wellington form suggested, but he had to be ridden to beat Tremetus, who ran an excellent race.. Full Measure, who was not too well placed early, was finishing on in good style. Set Fair showed plenty of speed. Bells of Shandon shaped well enough after beginning slowly. Topstar and Sub-Editor were always in' the rear,, and Hampton Park made no showing.'
HAURAKI HACK HANDICAP,
'Havaspot was at odds on, and his second dividend was very small. Kawainga returned a good price. Havaspot and Ayoncourt led'down the straight • from Brampton, Kawainga, Always, and Prince of Orange. Havaspot was steadied at the seven-furlong post, and struck trouble from then on, Prince of Orange going out with Brampton, then coming Kawainga,, Avoncourt, and. Hav.aspot. Kawainga moved up to the leaders, Prince ' of Orange and Brampton, at the turn, where Bagby on the favourite made an effort to get up on the inside but failed. He had to come round, and failed by a neck to reach Kawainga. Prince of Orange was half a length back third, and Brampton and Always next.
Kawainga finished well, but no doubt Havaspot should have won. Prince of Orange ran a good race,. but just failed. Brampton was a creditable fourth. Dark Prince was Cut out at the start.

Lady Quex made no race of it, and Prince Val, although he made a good effort/Was not her class as a sprinter. Gold Money began very slowly, but finished well. Her turn will soon come.
