BANDITS ON YANGTSE

RAID ON BRITISH BOAT

ORDEAL FOR OFFICIALS

LONDON, 17th January

Posing as Revenue officers searching for opium, a boatload of bandits boarded tho British river-boat Tuckwo, bearing six British Embassy members, including the Legation secretary, between Nanking arid Chinkiaug yesterday. They disclosed their identity after reaching the deck. Tho bandits wounded several Chinese who resisted, threw one overboard alive, and seized a small quantity of opium. Government troops on the shore, apparently suspecting piracy, fired recklessly on the Tuckwo, hundreds of bullets spattering the vessel's sides. The fire was intensified upon the pirates' departure in a launch carrying the stolen opium. The steamer reached Shanghai safely.
