ENCOURAGING FIGURES

SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY British Official Wlreleii. RUGBY, 15th January. Encouraging figures regarding the shipbuilding industry are issued by Lloyd's Eegister. In the last quarter of 1929 the tonnago launched was the largest of the year, and showed an increase of over 103,000 tons, and of over 227,000 tons on the corresponding quarter of 1928, which were in themselves better than the year, preceding. ' Last year's output, which is one of the best recorded for many years, exceeds that of all other countries combined by 203,000 tons. Almost 40 per cent, of tho work now being done by British yards represents orders placed from abroad. Commenting on the figures, "The Times" says: "The outlook for British shipbuilding, especially in view of the limitation of naval work, is far from unclouded, but there are grounds for encouragement in the present returns, and builders are hoping that the worst period of depression is passed."
