SOME INTERESTING PLAY

AY'ith some sections finished and the others narrowed clown to the final stages, the games at the Dominion croquet tournament, Palmerston North, yesterday were most interesting, and an enthusiastic gathering witnessed the afternoon's play. The management is hopeful of completing the remaining sections to-day. all games to be played at the Manawatu greens. In the final of the handicap singles, five bisques, and under, Mrs. Simpson (a), of Takaro, defeated Mrs. Bock (2%), of AVellington, 20-23. Shortly after the commencement Mrs. Simpson (blue. and black) secured some line shots to place the blue clip on the fifth, while Mrs. Bock (red and yellow) took both balls to the second. After separating, Mrs. Bock made a four-ball break of six hoops with yellow, breaking down at the third back, with black nearby. Mrs. Simpson separated yellow and red, and laying up for a rush with black, went to the sixth hoop. She was forced to take a bisque in order to improve her position with blue. After taking black to the penultimate in a four-ball break, Mrs. Bock got in on red, making the fourth with yellow and laying for a three-ball break which broke down at the sixth. Mrs. Simpson made the second with blue off red, but missed a short shot at the third. Following Mrs. Bock croqueted blue nicely to the fourth back, a bout of long shots ensued, her opponent then making the fourth-back off yellow before Mrs. Bock retaliated with red at the third-back, with yellow in attendance. Mrs. Simpson missed a long shot, and yellow went to the first back to baulk at the hoop. Mis. Simpson went to black with blue, her opponent then taking black to the penultimate. However, the Takaro player failed to reach yellow at the rover but, using a bisque, separated, and made a break of four to the fourth-back with blue. A long shot missed, and Mrs. Simpson pealed the fourth-back, following this up with two more hoops with blue. Mrs. Bock put her yellow clip on the peg after using red and black in nice positional shots, going then to the line, and forcing her opponent to use the halfbisque to separate. Mrs. Simpson roqueted black to make the penultimate, but baulked at the rover. Mrs. Bock missed another long shot, and black was placed on the peg in company with yellow, red and blue then being on the rover. Mrs. Simpson took blue to the peg, and placed for a rush'-with black. Mrs. Bock missed a long shot, black then .being croqueted to the peg, thus terminating the turn. Roqueting blue and sticking with red in the rover, Mrs. Simpson hit red back and croqueted blue to the peg, 26-23. Mrs. Mouat, of Waimarie, Lower Hntt, who is officially handicapped at four and a-half bisques, went to the final in the second life of the ladies' championship, in which there is no concedure, by defeating Mesdames Gambrili (1), Robertson (3), and Bartlett(l) in three successive matches. Detailed results of the day's play are as under: — ' HANDICAP SINGLES. (Five bisques and under.) Final: Mrs. E. Simpson (Takaro) defeated Mrs. Bock (Wellington), 26-23. LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. First Life.—Third round: Mrs., Tiffen defeated Mrs. Boi'tlett, 20-18; Mrs. Waters defeated Mrs. Gambrili, 28-21. Fourth round: Mrs. Kibblewhite defeated Mrs. Tiffen, 26-23. Second Life.—Second round: Mrs. Mouat defeated Mrs. Gambrili, 26-24. Third round: Mrs. Mouat defeated Mrs. Robertson, 20-13. Fourth round: Mrs. Mouat defeated Mrs. Bartlett, 26-14.
