EXTRACTING A CONFESSION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 15th January. In view of the controversy that arost over the methods used by the headman-' ter of the Avondale Public School to extract a confession of theft from a pupil, the Education Board Committee to-day" report that the headmaster had been exonerated from the charge of using any harshness in investigating the alleged theft. The board expressed regret that the board's servant had been subjected to criticism concerning his actions. It had been alleged that the headmaster's methods were tantamount to the application of the third degree, and the easeowas pursued in the Supreme Court, with the result that an order placing the child in the care of the Child Welfare Officer was quashed.
