AMATEUR ATHLETICS

DR. PELTZER'S ARRANGEMENTS

A meeting o£ the Council of the NewZealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr. H. A. Austad presiding. The chairman welcomed to the meeting Mr. E. S. Marks, secretary of the Athletic Union of Australia, and representative in Australia of the New Zealand Association. With regard to the visit to Australia of the German athlete, Dr. Peltzer, Mr. Marks said that rather a difficult position existed. Since his arrival in Australia Dr. Peltzer had announced that he would be able to compete at only three meetings, and that his stay was limited to 21 days. He was also allowed to compete at one meeting in America.^ It was desired to extend the visit to six weeks, and the international body had agreed to the extension. Mr. Marks was at present awaiting a reply to a cable he had dispatched to Germany to that effect and he would be able to advise the New Zealand Association more definitely on his arrival at Melbourne next week. The matter was left in Mr. Marks's hands, failing further word being received from Australia in the meantime. An application was received for recognition as a New Zealand record of Miss E. Hoyle's time of 6 1-lOsec for a distance of 50 yards. It was mentioned that the facts relating to the performance were all in order, but an objection was raised by Mr. L. A. Tracy, who said that recognition of Miss Hoyle's time as a record would result in innumerable applications being received for various distances, such as 60 yards and 65 yards. Mr. G. S. Bright questioned whether it was in the best interests of the sport to turn down the application. Mr. Austad spoke in favour of acceding to the request, and eventually the matter was referred to a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. E. G. Guy and V. Hugo. Reinstatements as amateurs were approved in the following cases: W. J. Lamberton (Canterbury), E. J. Drake (Canterbury1), A. E. Garcin (Wanganui-Tara-naki), R. .K. Vile (Woodville), R. Hall (Gisborne), L. C. Ferguson (Otago), C Reid (Stratford), P. G. Harkness (Midhirst), H. G. Curran (Otago), and D. Cubitt (Wellington). D. J. Oliver (Otago) was asked to make another application in twelve months' time. Applications from J. Forrest and A. H. Forrest were referred back to the Otago Centre for further information.
