MISHAP TO STEAMER
PROPELLER BLADE LOST
during Tier passage from Panama to {Auckland- the Canadian National kteamer Canadian Highlander lost a blade, from .her propeller. The vessel' arrived at midnight on Sunday, the accident having caused a delay of about three days^ :i ■•„..'.■•_ :.
The accident occurred on 26th December when about 3700 miles from 'Auckland. To prevent undue strain on the remaining three blades of the pro-peller-the speed was reduced about two knots. Fortunately the weather ■was fine until nearing New Zealand.
The four blades of the propeller are bolted on to the boss, and in ease of accidents iwo spare propeller blades are carried on. "the vessel. Before she loaves for southern ports .to complete discharge she will.go into dock and will befitted -with one of tho spare blades. The cargo for "Auckland totals about 3000 tens, which is expected to be discharged in 'time for the vessel to be docked on Thursday. . A similar accident befell the Canadian Highlander 13 months ago. She lost a. propeller blade on'sth December, 1928, when en route from Napier to Auckland ta- eomploto loading general cargo for 'America and Canada. 'She lost the blade- an hour after she loft Napior. On her arrival at Auckland sho berthed, at King's Wharf,.'where she was tipped in such a manner that her, stern was high eqopgh.to lift .the propeller clear of the water and.so allow, a new blade to be fitted without the necessity for docking.
