A CIVIL WAR ECHO

;'An interesting military medal conferred on Major General Kobley, Loedov, was recently brought to Wellington Tjy -the Key. D. O. Bates, so that it could be handed over to a local, friend of the old Maori War veteran, now in his ninety-first year. Some thirty-five years ago, Ma-jor-General Eobley wrote an appreciation, of the fighting qualities of the Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry, Duryee Zouaves, and when the article came to its notice, tho Veterans' Association of that famous corps appointed Major-General Eobley an honorary member, and presented him with a Maltese cross, engraved "H. G. Kobley" on the upper clasp, "MajorGeneral 8.8.A." on the lower, the inscription on the cross being "sth N.Y. VoL Infty, "U.S.A., Duryee Zouaves," with a large figure "5" in copper in the centre. The reverse reads, 'A token of esteem from the comrades of the Dfuryee Zouav.es, N.Y., Feby. 13th, 1896." The ribbon is the tri-colour of France. The Fifth New York Infantry was one of several volunteer regiments of the Union Army participating in the American Civil War, 1861-65, and adopted the name, and to some extent the uniform, of the French Zouaves. Major-General Kobley showed his appreciation of the kindly act by for■warding this American Veterans' Association, an inkstand, the lid of which represented the regimental brooch o£ his regiment, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
