CHAMPIONSHIP ROLL
. The winner of the New Zealand chess title, Mr. G. Gundersen, is the senior lecturer in mathematics at the Melbourne University, and is besides a regular contributor to the columns of the '' Argus " and the " Australasian.'' He is the present chess champion of Victoria, for about the tenth time. The runner-up, Mr. E. H. Severne, a master at Nelson College, has played for several years in New Zealand tournaments, and has been a consistent prize-winner. He has held the Nelson and Canterbury championships. Mr. Cyril Purdy, who filled third place, comes from Sydney. He is a young player, and has participated in two New Zealand congresses. He is now chess champion of New South Wales, and is one of the three best players in Australia. He is a student of the Sydney University, and owns and personally conducts a monthly chess magazine. Davies died in Auckland on 16th January, 1928; aged 52 years. The title was vacant for the remainder of the year. Thi3 is the first occasion of a champion dying In possession of the Ne# Zealand title.
